Common Problems
Associated with Feeding

Infant feeding can come with its challenges. We are well-versed in addressing common issues in both breast and bottle fed babies, such as - latching difficulties which can impede babies ability to feed effectively, leading to frequent and prolonged feeding, fussiness, weight issues and excessive air swallowing (aerophagia), leading to reflux, wind, and flatulence, all resulting in an unsettled baby, which can be extremely worrying and exhausting.

For mothers, breastfeeding problems can lead to sore or cracked nipples from improper latch, causing pain, or poor milk drainage that may lead to engorgement, blocked ducts, or mastitis - an infection causing inflammation and discomfort - potentially reducing milk supply.

We're committed to helping you navigate these challenges with expert care.

Our Support

At Zita Maria, our infant feeding support is designed to empower you to feed with confidence, whether breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or combining both. We bring decades of experience and a deep understanding of feeding challenges - rooted in our own journeys as mothers who’ve faced these issues ourselves. This allows us to genuinely empathise with your struggles, offering compassionate, non-judgmental support tailored to your unique needs. As expert tongue tie practitioners and midwives currently pursuing IBCLC certification, we combine the latest evidence-based expertise with a supportive approach, addressing all feeding concerns with compassion and understanding.
With prescribing rights, we can also manage issues such as mastitis and nipple thrush, prescribing appropriate treatments for you and your baby without the need for a separate GP visit.

Your Consultation

Our initial consultations, whether in the comfort and privacy of your own home or at our clinic, last approximately one hour, offering a comprehensive and supportive experience to address your feeding challenges. Prior to your consultation we will provide you with detailed information on what to expect and how to prepare for the appointment.

We begin with a detailed history-taking to understand your journey, followed by a thorough assessment of your baby’s feeding patterns - whether breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or a combination - along with an oral anatomy and function examination. You’ll receive information and advice grounded in the latest evidence-based practice, tailored to your needs. Where tongue tie is identified as a root cause, we can perform a quick and safe division procedure at our CQC-regulated clinic or in your home, leveraging our expertise as certified Tongue Tie Practitioners.

A comprehensive analysis of the consultation, including recommendations and referrals to our network of osteopaths and chiropractors specialised in paediatrics, will be emailed to you the same day, along with our aftercare leaflet and oral exercises to support your baby’s feeding. With prescribing rights, we can also manage conditions like mastitis or nipple thrush, offering tailored treatments without a separate GP visit. Together, we craft an individualised feeding plan, and we provide a follow-up appointment to review progress, offer additional tips, and check your baby’s weight if needed - ensuring you and your baby thrive at every step.
